Buiten Wittevrouwen

Atmosphere and specifics

  • The neighbourhood is called after the convent of sisters that lived according to the rules of the holy Norbertus. Their convent was also called the Wittevrouwen convent after the colour of their robe.
  • The neighbourhood is bordered roughly by Maliesingel, Biltstraat and Maliebaan.
  • The neighbourhood is characterised by shopping street Nachtegaalstraat. Diametrically opposed to this main street are several other longer street with in between smaller working-class houses.
  • Because of its location, near the city centre and the presence of all possible facilities in the area itself, this is a very popular neighbourhood. Residential parking is difficult here, but people tend to accept this.
  • One of the most special places of the neighbourhood is Maliebaan, not only because of the sculpture trail but also the stately buildings along this beautiful lane. It is well worth a visit.
  • In the near future, the crossing Maliebaan and Nachtegaalstraat/Burgemeester Reigerstraat will be redeveloped. The different variants prompt lots of discussions with residents and users.
