Atmosphere and specifics

  • Constructed before 1900
  • Mostly former working-class dwellings.
  • Popular residential area. The Minstroom runs through the neighbourhood and is a branch of the Kromme Rijn.
  • Minbrug and Marksbrug are monuments.
  • Is roughly bordered by Wolter Heukelslaan, Homeruslaan, Prinsesselaan and Wilhelminapark.
  • Highly diverse houses varying from the stately houses at Prinsesselaan and Emmalaan to the small former working-class dwellings behind Oudwijkerdwarsstraat.
  • Main (shopping) street is Burgemeester Reigerstraat, which goes straight through the neighbourhood.
  • One of the most characteristic buildings is the Spoorwegmuseum (Railway Museum), located at the former Maliebaan Station.
  • Oudwijk is a broad term for the people of Utrechters because instinctively, they also include the areas Buiten Wittevrouwen (Nachtegaalstraat), de Maliebaan, Wilhelminapark and the neighbouring streets within Abstede (Zonstraat, Minstraat, Piet Heinstraat, part of Abstederdijk).
