Wittevrouwen

Atmosphere and specifics

  • The neighbourhood is bordererd by Biltsche Grift, Biltstraat, Wittevrouwensingel and Griftpark.
  • The neighbourhood was called after the convent of sisters who lived according to the rules of the holy Norbertus. The convent was also called the Wittevrouwenklooster, after the colour of the robes of the nuns.
  • Mid 19th century, the smaller streets and courtyards were built and mostly working-class houses were constructed which give the neighbourhood its characterist appearance.
  • When the municipal gas plant was closed in 1960, the terrain proved badly contaminated. Later, the Griftpark was laid-out here on these grounds.
  • The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine was located in the neighbourhood until 1981, after that it moved to De Uithof.
